Roberta Smith, Art Critic, New York Times, on Bloomberg New Contemporaries

381-cover-l_180_254Very pleased to have had a mention in the November 2014 edition of Art Monthly, especially as Eleanor Clayton’s review of the Bloomberg New Contemporaries at The World Museum, Liverpool is one of the most thoughtful reviews of the show I have read so far. Clayton states “There is plenty of inventive draughtsmanship on display, continuing the drawing renaissance of the past few decades…meditating on iterative mark making, Deborah Westmancoat’s ‘Mountain’ (2013) repeats and lattices charcoal lines on found board, enclosing a riveted piece of metal. The grey marks and the combined found materials recall Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg respectively, but the real delight is Westmancoat’s sensitivity to the shapes, and the deterioration or patina of her materials and the points of interest created in their conjunction.”
